Do We Blame The Grocery Store For Being Fat?

ok, since I am thinking of my time as a Mom---10 years this March---I would like to make a few statements about the recent story of the birth of the octuplets.

For those who don't read a newspaper or magazine, don't watch the news or any late shows, or never look at any online homepages other than Facebook (or of course, my blog), let me tell you a summary. A woman who had fertility treatment(s) and has mothered 6 children underwent invitro fertilization again--she had 20% more eggs implanted than recommended (being 6 total embryos implanted) and those embryos split, thus bringing her total embryos to 8. This woman successfully birthed the octuplets and is now facing a world of controversy. You see, this woman is a 33-year old single mother, who lives with her parents---and I believe I already mentioned she has SIX OTHER CHILDREN!!!!

The above is not the most absurd part of the story in my opinion. The media is criticizing the Fertility Doctor for her decision. I know, I know, the Dr. COULD have recommended against implanting the additional 2 embryos, but is it his dollar being spent? Most of the cost of invitro is the procedure, not the number of embryos. What if he had implanted less & none of the embryos took? Then his patient's money was a waste and his reputation of success is marred.

The media is saying the Dr. is responsible for it all. Let me ask you, if you go into the grocery store every day and buy a dozen donuts and go home and eat them while you polish it off with a 2-liter of Coke---is it the grocery store's fault when you get fat? I don't think so! Like the grocery store, which is a business whose goal is customer satisfaction & monetary gains, this Dr. simply did his job.

Perhaps to blame are this woman's parents--or whoever else is funding these expensive fertility treatments. Her parents are enabling her to make these foolish decisions by allowing their daughter to reside with them as she decides to further meet the guidelines for welfare assistance. The hospital bills alone for these newborns is already a million dollars and the babies are not even able to leave there yet!

This woman, who has been treated for depression in her past, is supposedly normal for wanting so many children because of the fact that she grew up as a lonely child. This woman, who has obviously had several plastic surgeries done on her face alone (notice her odd shaped Angelina Jolie wanna-be lips, and her Michael Jackson-like nose) does not qualify as the poster child for high self-confidence. Can you imagine the extent of the tummy tuck she will need after birthing 14 children under the age of 10? Not to mention the fact that her uterus might as well get stapled to her backbone now---make that her collarbone--it has years to sag down to the backbone level.

If this woman was such a humanitarian & believed she was capable of raising a multitude & obviously has endless funding, she should have just adopted children who need a home--and maybe then had twins of her own (again a reference to Angelina Jolie). In 15 years I wonder how many of her children will speak up and say---"I am so glad my Mom had time for me" (remembering of course that to hold each octuplet for a mere 45 minutes a day takes almost 7 hours---and don't forget how important holding a newborn is to its sense of security and health).

So all I have to say is, don't blame Walmart for being fat!

and, SuperNanny, you have met your match!

The Beginning of the Adventure

Well I have come to the conclusion that life is rushing by. My daughter will officially be a teenager in a few days, and my son hits the milestone of being a decade old in a month. The years are passing at record speeds and I have all these thoughts that I hold inside.

Every reason that keeps me from journaling vanishes when I sit down in front of my computer. I don't have to find the perfect book that lies flat when you write & has big enough pages so you dont have to micro-print. I don't have to worry about finding the perfect inkpen to write with-one that flows smooth black ink-not so thin that it is hard to read, yet not so thick that you must prop the book open until the ink dries. I don't have to worry about crossing out or finding a bottle of white-out if I change my mind after I write an entire sentence-I can simply delete. I don't have to be in the mood to write neatly--which seems to never coincide with the urge to spill my thoughts. Therefore, I have decided to begin a blog.

Most days I post will more than likely be random meaningless ramblings, but on the rare chance that what I write has significance, I can simply print it & stick it in a folder which I will title-My Journal. So here begins the journey into the mind of me. Sit down, buckle-up, and hold on tight--this ride is sure to be filled with twists & turns and a few wild u-turns as well as a few sudden stops. Enjoy or don't-but if you comment (and I encourage you to), remember that most of what I say (or write) is tinged with humor, so don't take anything I have mentioned too seriously. Bon Voyage!
